The second act in the rhetorical-botanical controversy between Jean-Baptiste Christophe Fusée-Aublet and Pierre Poivre in the 1750s: Dans la « fabrique du savoir » des muscadiers (Myristica Houtt.). This new scientific publication, again published in the Revue d'Histoire des Sciences, offers a quantitative and qualitative inventory of the plant material brought back during Poivre's various expeditions (1753, 1755), based on an analysis of the "botanical clues" detected in various manuscripts. With Thibaud Martinetti, we examine the methodology used to determine this plant species of very high economic value and highlight the many obstacles - both factual and epistemic - that hampered Enlightenment botanical knowledge (Link).

New scientific publication published in the Revue d'Histoire des Sciences! This is a continuation of our collaborative work, combining botanical, historical and literary approaches, as part of SNSF-Sinergia project no 186227 (Official Website). Written with Thibaud Martinetti, this article looks back at the famous scientific dispute between the apothecary-botanist Fusée-Aublet and the agronomist Pierre Poivre over the veracity of the nutmeg trees Poivre brought back to the Isle of France (now Mauritius). This first part highlights the importance of rhetorical argument in a conflict that goes beyond the simple framework of an academic controversy (Link). A second part, focusing on the botanical elements of the discourse, is currently in preparation.
